August 22, 1997 is a red circle day in worldwide water polo history. On that day the final match of the European Championships, Hungary – Yugoslavia, took place in Sevilla and the Hungary team won 3-2.
The amazing match is mainly remembered as “unique” because of the three goals scored by the same player, Tams Kasas.
Considered as one of the best water polo player, on that day Kasas was only 21 but, he was already a rising star in the firmament.
The European defeat was one of the successful steps of his extraordinary career crowned by 3 consecutive olympic medals.
Coming back to the match in Vienna, here below an article wrote by the young Dario Di Gennaro for Rai Sport:
At the end of a suffering final match against Yugoslavia, Hungary team released his disappointment for the past European competition when he gave in to Settebello. The path of Hungary team started with difficulty (1-0 in the first period), it seemed to be even compromised in the second and third period after the goal of its rivals. But, in the last moments Hungary used the joker Tamas Kasas who run through the adversary in two occasions, 5'28" and 23" from the end of the match. Kasas made the first goal. Bronze medal went to Russia vs Croatia after a hard match ended in over time.
